Turning down a Top-Tier Scholarship at a T14 for Seattle?
Bit of a weird situation, so I'll cut to the chase.
Got into Cornell!! And they are covering...a lot of the cost (half-ish). I got into other, "better" T14 schools but all want massive debt. Cornell has always had a particularly special place for me and been the "dream school" since I was a kid. I honestly did not even know they were T14 until I started my app.
I also got into the University of Washington (T50), which comes out to about the same cost (within a few thousand dollars). I live in Washington, went to UW for undergrad, and ideally would practice in Seattle or the west coast. It is not as fancy, but would not mind keeping my friends around while I suffer 1L.
Unlike a lot of folks here, I don't want to do BL. I have been a legal assistant in consumer class-action and appellate law in a boutique office for the past four years, and know that's what makes me happy. Love the briefs, love the mathematics, love the wacky legal theories. I personally avoid LA and NYC like the plague, but would be happy practicing pretty much anywhere else, if it meant class-action or appellate/trial casework.
The attorneys here at work are pretty split on where I ought to go. While staying in Seattle would be nice, Cornell seems like it would give me a leg up on getting jobs in my dream practice area. What do you think? Does place or prestige matter more here?
[important side note, maybe: my current job is public-interest related--the attorneys said they would guarantee me a job if I wanted, but we're all in agreement I should look for something higher-paying, as the salary ain't too pretty]
