Great news: Frognation and Ryan Morris are back handling the localization for Elden Ring
Here's the timestamped interview confirming their involvement: https://youtu.be/8evqtvdmj0I?t=433
Reading and commenting in this thread about the excellent localization of From's games on r/patientgamers made me wonder if Ryan Morris or anyone at Frognation has ever done any on-camera interviews about their work with From. A quick YouTube search brought me to the above video, which I still don't fully understand but in which Morris confirms that he and his team are handling Elden Ring’s localization!
For anyone wondering why this is good news, Frognation and Morris specifically have done an incredible job localizing the text and casting and recording the dialogue for all of Miyazaki's games since Demon's Souls with the notable exception of Sekiro, which had a substantially rougher, less evocative English translation and dramatically worse English voice acting than any of the others (although fortunately Sekiro is meant to be played in Japanese). I have no idea why Frognation wasn't involved with Sekiro, but I'm relieved to know that they're back in the mix for Elden Ring.
If any of you are curious to know more, there's a great chapter about Morris' work on the games in Keza MacDonald and Jason Killingsworth's You Died. He and Miyazaki are close collaborators, and the two of them evidently go back and forth over the translations and voice lines making suggestions and adjustments to one another. Here's an especially interesting tidbit from the chapter:
"Many of the lines in Dark Souls are actually Ryan's own original work — most notably, Solaire's lines. If you've ever wished that you, too, could be grossly incandescent, you're quoting Ryan's dialogue. Writing Dark Souls with Miyazaki must be a little like being the person who writes a popular song that's performed by a famous artist — you're never the one who gets the credit. 'Nobody knows me, but they know my little phrases,' laughs Ryan."
And for any of you going truly hollow, Ryan says in this interview that Elden Ring is “progressing nicely.” That’s something!
