How do big families transport everyone?

Does anyone know the type of vehicle driven by people like Karissa Collin, Anna Duggar, etc? How do they get a family of 11 or 8 anywhere?

Our local Pentecostal (sp?) family had a 15 passenger van for 11 people.

I fucked one of their sons in the back on Christmas Eve the year we were both on block leave from Basic.

You did the Lord Daniel's work.

My husband just looked at me like I was nuts when I burst out laughing for no reason.

Tell him I was bringing the Lord Daniel to Pastor Jim’s son and he’ll 100% for sure leave you alone for the rest of the night.

It actually was some fairly decent coitus, all things considered.

I read that quickly as cunnilingus and I was like “No shit? A fundie boy, that not only ate pussy, but was good at it?😏” 😅😅😅

Yes to both, actually! But I was his first full-coitus event, before, oral was his outer experience. So he made sure to do it well!! 🤣

I can’t speak for other families, but I’m one of 11 and my parents had a 15 passenger van🤣😭

Same, I had 12 siblings and we had an OLD/used 15 passenger van and then when that clunked out, my parents got an extended van similar to the Nissan NV vans being posted but older. Even with that, there were times it was impossible to go out as an entire family without taking multiple vehicles. It was easier to go in groups.

Which, by the way, is nearly impossible to safely install a car seat in. So...that tracks.

So that went a little anti Semitic there... yikes.

What makes this antisemitic? We call people fundies. Seriously asking?

My husband is one of ten and his parents had a massive 15 seater van. That’s the car my husband learned to drive in and now he can parallel park like a NASCAR superstar.

My neighbor back in 2011 had nine children (not Fundie, just...absolutely freakin' nuts without the religion), and she had an old school bus. I have a coworker who has ten children (two bio, eight adopted) and she has a fifteen passenger van. I assume Fundies also either have large capacity vans or buses (although where do we draw the line between "large capacity van" and "may as well be a bus, sis"?)

So my cousin was that mom who was very involved with her kids lives. Room mother? Check. PTO? Check. Girl scout leader? Check. Sports mom? Check.

She bought a 15 passenger van to drive her kids teams around. Her last child graduated a few years ago and they sold it.

I was 1 of 7, however, my oldest siblings was 16 when the youngest was born and my brother drove some of us around.

The gist of this thread is just large occupancy vehicles lol

I know, right. And here was me expecting options such as trebuchets, hover packs, witchcraft and sherpas.

23
Atlmama•

The trebuchets have the advantage of speed, but sacrifice some accuracy. Sure, you think you’re yeeting the kids to the grocery store, but oops, they end up at Home Depot at the neighboring strip mall. Awkward.

Or worse, the local school or cinema!!!

Vehicle that would need an additional license endorsement in Europe.

Not sure about Anna but back in the day the Duggars had a mini bus for smaller trips when SOME children went along and an ACTUAL bus for the whole family, it may have been converted into an Mobile home style set up for travelling or they actually had two buses. Edit: For smaller ‘large’ families here in Australia, I’d think anywhere over 4 kids would need a mini van type situation. 7 and 8 seaters like a Toyota Land Cruiser or Mazda CX-9 or similar SUVs lose nearly all storage space when using all seats.

26

Hyundai imax van seems to be popular with families over 4 kids around here. The ones with the automatic sliding doors. I also know some families with special needs kids who have the same so I assume they have space for everything that goes with that.

I’ve got 3 kids and a 7 seater Santa Fe so I can ferry other peoples kids around when required.

There are a few full size SUVs that come in extra long versions. My expedition seats 8 and still has a full cargo area.

3
teagz_teagz•

Unfortunately not available here! Would have to import and convert to right hand drive. We might be getting Tahoes and Suburbans in the next couple of years apparently.

3
calenturiana flock of scapegoats•

We've had Suburbans for a while, haven't we? I remember a while ago one of my co-workers had one and my other co-worker used to call it the Holden Suburb.

2
Heartslumber•

Suburbans are full size with a full cargo area!

1
Houseofmonkeys5•

I've got a sequoia that seats 8 and I have 5 kids. No one wants the third row middle seat, lol.

paperclipsalesman•

The Collins drive a big fuck-off Nissan NV passenger van. I had to drive a similar one (but meant for cargo) for the first time for work last year, and getting into it was a... weird experience given that I associated them so heavily with fundie families up to that point.

I don't know that any of the ones we commonly snark on do, but some families will buy retired school buses and use those. Slap some shitty DIY paint job on it, skip adding seatbelts, call it done.

15
Kitchen_Witch13•

That's wild, my boyfriend's company uses the cargo version as HVAC work vehicles. Also apparently they're being discontinued for whatever reason.

5
paperclipsalesman•

Oh damn, that'll be interesting. My company exclusively uses Nissan for our fleet, I wonder if that'll have to change.

We use ours for transporting blood products. Highly preferable to using it for 12 little blessings imo. Probably easier to clean up after in case of a spill too.

2
Kitchen_Witch13•

Yeah, boyfriend's family business upgraded both of their trucks maybe two years ago to these and now are looking at hiring another technician which means another truck. Idk what they're going to go with, took them a while to decide Nissan. His dad's work vehicle is a smaller Dodge utility van, but he only uses it for sales calls and small errands like picking up recycling or visiting their active work sites.

It’s a good way to show the world your pull out game is weak

The friends of the fundies next door to me all seem to have either giant SUVs, and a couple have what appear to be not yet churched church vans. Having fricking parties and prayer meetings and bible study all plague year. I live next to a petri dish. 🙃

12
ChocolateMuffins2•

A family I used to know (fundie-lite if not full fundie) had nine children and when I knew them they took two cars if they were all going somewhere. Some of the older kids could drive, but usually the dad drove one car and the mom drove the other.

Most of the other large families I've known had a fifteen-passenger van (and a regular car that the dad drove to work).

7
violet765•

Large vehicles are pretty expensive for the lesser fundies - I get the impression that many of them don’t all go places together very often. Many of them have home churches (which also has tax advantages) - where else do they go as a group?

6
FairyDustSailor•

I know a family with 6 kids and they drive a Nissan NV van like this one: https://www.edmunds.com/nissan/nv-passenger/2016/review/

3
fatpandass•

Think church/ airport pickup van, for more than 5 kids. When you see a fundie driving a car it's ,at least, the second vehicle.

3
[deleted]•

I was just thinking about this lol. Passenger vans are really tbe only choice!!

Honesltly even with just one I got a mini van because I never realized how ridiculous it is to fit car seats into regular cars. Especially with my husband's height. We had a sedan and that was a big nope. Then a hatchback SUV and even that was supppper tight. Husband couldn't sit in passenger seat. Also a no go in my moms Jeep without someone being uncomfortable. Sometimes I stress myself out thinking how I'm going to transport 3 kids (if we get to have that many) plus friends plus all their stuff around lmao.

3
embos_wife•

I'm 5'11", husband is 6'1" and oldest son is 6'3", plus one in a booster and 1 rear facing. I cannot imagine doing this without a van. We can all have our seats in a comfortable way. Minivans are the best!

3
italyqt•

Legit loved my mini van with two kids and a dog! The mini van had so much cargo area too.

My husband and I are short. We have 2 kids in car seats (one rear-facing convertible, one infant) and drive a RAV4 and a Prius. One of the benefits of being short lol.

2
ducttapeduterus•

I used to work for a place for disabled people and drove a 15 seat van. There's a bench in the back for four. Three additional benches for three each, then the passenger and driver.

1

I knew someone who bought something like this, he only had 3 kids but they fought so much he figured it was easier to give them a row each

2
throwing_flames•

One family we know who adopted like 20 kids (I'm still sus about that situation) had a literal bus as their family vehicle.

1
dawn9476•

On their show, the Bates used their big van and then 2 other vehicles to transport everyone to Gil's parents home for Thanksgiving back in 2014.

1
libertyd66•

Was friends with a family with 12 kids- they never had everyone in one car because the oldest was engaged by the time the youngest was born. They have a couple cars the older kids & parents trade around and a 15 passenger van

1
Ziggypurrdust•

My grandparents had five kids, so they bought an orange kombi. They weren't fundies, just went to church because grandad was in the habit.

1
LittlehouseonTHELANDSure to fly by like pancakes•

I knew a family with 7 kids, they had a minivan and a station wagon and if the whole family was going somewhere they'd take both cars.
