For my squirrel... every year I fight to keep food we can eat from a female squirrel (and each litter of babies). This year, added blackberries for her (to keep more of my food). And picked up more vines to add for her today

Love this, I plant enough to feed about 80 people. Knowing full well the wildlife will cull it down to enough for my family and neighbours. Better that than using sprays etc imo.

I'm growing seeds this year off veggies neighbors gave me last year. I'll still have tons to share

So this is a sacrificial crop?

Yes

Let us know if it works!

I love how you have decided to live with nature. Most people would just poison her or something. You are amazing I hope they do well.

I love everything about this idea.

I did have a summer I refused to plant anything edible, figured why do all the work and get nothing... found it best to plant more than we can eat. Still have to water etc, no real extra work... and if nature doesn't eat a ton, can donate extra to neighbors or local food locker

Hypothetically hurting her (squirrel) doesn't mean another won't take her place. We have lots of them in our neighborhood. And me adding extra means nothing to neighbors, they don't even water grass, they skip past their yards

I've been looking on FB marketplace and CL for fountains and bird baths... might have to snag a birdbath on Amazon. Last year I did a bee thing with marbles at bottom, but hard to remember to keep up with water in extreme heat. Which made me feel worse... the bees didn't always have a place to get water

Hubby was talking about digging up a hole in backyard for koi pond... I don't want to. I don't want the neighborhood cats eating them. Already have to do humming bird feeder off porch in a way the cats leave that little buddy of mine alone

I also have to hope she let's some fruit from plant grow new vines to grow up wall. Last year she barely let the grapes get ripe before eating. Hoping the three I snagged off FB marketplace grow well (they are seedling they dug out). Have wall along whole back wall to grow on

I'm sure your neighbors are thrilled. /s

Why wouldn't they be? Have I missed something about getting free, organic produce that's bad? They seem to love it 🤔

Zero neighbor in the history of the world has ever been pleased at any neighbor purposely feeding squirrels.

Neighbor here. This would please me.

Checkmate.

This would not please me, you can't call checkmate when you're in zugzwang.

Zero? 🤔 Not everyone's neighbors are close enough to know or care if you feed the squirrels.

I think it's beautiful. Indigenous people planned 1/3 for harvest, 1/3 for sharing and 1/3 back for Mother Earth (including her animals)

I wish mother earth would tell her deer they had their 1/3 a while ago 🤣

Lol, I'm in Australia. I'm talking about insects / caterpillars mostly, fences keep the kangaroos and (imported) deer out. We don't even have squirrels.
