Saw ‘Creation Stories’ in the cinema - my take is in OP, what’s yours?

Discussion

Wandered along to see the Alan McGee biopic at the cinema, which might be an option for people in the coming months, depending on where you are. I’ve commented on a few threads about it espousing my very low expectations. Music biopics tend to be shit; all lookalike actors & no plot or genuine filmmaking.

I must say, my low expectations were unfortunately met. A roll-call of well-trodden Creation Records stories & faces, & nothing more. If you’re one of the recent Oasis-convert kids who populate the sub these days, definitely go along for a look, you might learn a thing or two & you’ll love the 80s & 90s nostalgia, & fair enough!
But if you’re a fan of the Creation stable & canon, have seen all the docos & read McGee’s book, & you have higher expectations than I did, I suggest you lower them.

There’s actually hardly any Oasis involvement, most of it’s pre-McGee signing them. The actor playing Liam is freakishly accurate, but the one playing Noel is atrocious, & they haven’t even tried for lookalikes with the rest of the band. The weirdest thing about it from an Oasis point of view is that it first uses a shot of Liam in about 2018 in the opening credits (which otherwise features stock footage of Creation bands at the time), & then that his character’s last line is, ‘As you were, Alan’ (a catchphrase from the solo career that began two decades after the events of the film). Having those things from well after the period of time is just so inaccurate, so on the nose; Warners must have partially funded it ir something.

Overall, my recommendation is to watch ‘Upside Down’, the Creation doco from 2010 instead.

I’d be interested in people’s takes though!

I think the film is terrible HOWEVER I also think it's fascinating. Like you said with the up to date Liam photo and 'as you were' catchphrase it seems like a slight attempt to cash in on the Pretty Green, Dark Fruits, Lynx Africa crowd. Except there's over an hour of stuff they won't know about or maybe even care about to get there. Meaning that it is mostly skipped over with little to no depth to get to the Oasis stuff.

So if you see the film for Oasis you're sitting around for ages to actually get there and if you see the film for 80's indie, DIY record label shenanigans with Primal Scream and Teenage Fanclub you'll also be disappointed as the film tries to get through that stuff as quickly as possible.

It does seem a bit odd to do a biopic on the man that signed one of the biggest bands in modern history...rather than the band

If it presented itself as a film about Oasis & then sidelined them I’d agree, but it doesn’t; it’s a film about Alan McGee, whose life’s been about a lot more than just Oasis. While Oasis were his biggest commercial success story, McGee was responsible for a myriad of great bands, almost all of which precede Oasis. To be honest, one of the only things I liked about the film was that it didn’t let Oasis dominate the narrative.
