Never thought I'd agree with Neville of all people, but he's hit the nail on the head with this one. The clubs should be ashamed of themselves.

91
SirGoldfish•

He's generally got good points when it comes to big picture stuff about football

61

Cos at the end of the day, like the rest of us, he’s a proper fan and knows what’s best for the game

37
NolaBrass•

His comments about points penalties are dumb because that encourages the teams to leave and form a league where they have more control, the exact thing they’re trying to do in the first place.

Obviously, I agree with everything else he said but that particular point seemed to go against the principles of his other arguments

7
abstract_titanic•

yeah, not sure I get that that. if they sign a letter of intent... I don't see how a fine or point deduction would contribute anything. it would make PL look "strong in stance", but in general, it does fuck all, and like you've said, even more reason to leave.

3
Noslek•

Points deduction means they'd earn less money for being at the top end of the table which would then go to clubs who deserve it more than these 6 clubs

-In Roy Keane voice: Where are you getting the 300-400m from with an empty stadium the last year? You're living in fantasy land if you think they're bringing in that kinda free money to spend from online sales and no stadium tours with the stadium shop closed lad. Pure fantasy. You're not living in the real world lad if they're the figures in your head.

I like how you are talking about 2 different things altogether.

Maybe you are just joking or being sarcastic, but no one is focusing on just the next season as this one is affected by covid, I'm talking about in the long term, when everyones lives are back to normal, aka the future.

United are going to so far ahead of everyone if all the greedy owners in the league were to be kicked out. It'd be the last thing you'd call PL a 'fair competition'.

Even with covid they are only at 13m operating loss for last season, our numbers most likely at 150m with the RedBird Capital's investment as a cover to our loss.

1
Very_Slow_Cheetah•

United are so far ahead of everyone, that's why they're 8 points behind the real Manchester team in the EPL?
Is that why they're competing in the final stages of the Champions League this year? .....oh wait, they're not..They're in the Bitch League with Arsenal! GFY

No he hasn’t, he was emotional and dismissive as is his way, don’t fall for the fake millionaires tears

Exactly.

Gary “Null and Void” Neville. Great arbiter of sporting integrity he is right?

I can tell this is a bad idea on my own. Don’t need that morons input.

I think most people would agree this is much, much worse than the formation of the premier league though. This completely removes the competitive aspect of the game completely. Yeah it’s hard to break into the top of the game currently, but this would make it literally an impossibility.

76
whoaaa_O•

Leicester are doing a great job trying to break into the top four. They deserve to be in the CL more than Arsenal or Spurs.

61
luke363636•

West Ham have had an amazing season that surprised everyone, as much as I want us to beat them to a CL spot it would be the biggest bullshit to basically prevent teams like that from ever qualifying for the CL again

26
Maneisthebeat•

The improvement of the mid-table teams probably played a part in swaying the weak-spined ownership.

"Instead of having to compete against these mid-table teams we could earn more money and not need to worry about not making Europe? Win-win."

2
kezzerb•

Didn’t the break away to form the PL have the backing of the FA though?

1
aravindvrahul•

The European Super League sucks, but it's a monster that's been (at least in part) created by the very organisations decrying it now. Football was handed over to corporate interests, at the expense of the fans, a long time ago. Sky is crying now because they stand to loose from it. PL and FA allowed football to be owned by billionaires at the behest of Sky. Now, why are they acting surprised when they turn on them for money?. For me all this outrage from sky and other pundits this is a money Vs money issue more than anything. If CL proposes almost the same format, these same TV studios won't even cover them.

46
wassam1•

I agree. They have created monsters and they have grown wings and want to set out on their own after seeing what they are capable of. Things like Man City getting away with a slap on the wrist for breaking FFP rules etc. It was only a matter of time before something like a super league happened.

14

Exactly this! Millionaires crying cos billionaires are greedy!! Gary nevilles tears won’t solve this issue

5
abstract_titanic•

agreed completely. there is no side in this hat isn't disgusting tbh.

3
myglasscase•

outrage from sky and other pundits

The pundits like Neville and Carra are not the ones making millions off broadcasting rights. They are fans first and foremost and are rightly furious about the situation

Ironic that they are saying this on Sky of all places. Sky was the TV company that benefited hugely from the breakaway that formed the FA Premier League. Sky was the company that caused the British public to start to have to pay to watch games on TV. They literally created a two tier system where those who can afford it can watch it and those was cannot are just out of luck or they have to go and watch it in a pub. People now forget that subscription TV to watch football was very controversial and unpopular when it was introduced.

We all know if a Super League gets up and running, Sky will be trying desperately to get the rights for it, and then their talking heads will be singing it's praises.

26
beanpole97•

Gary was spot on. This has honestly broken my heart, I never thought there would be a time that I would be having thoughts of turning my back on a club Ive supported for 15 years but this is really making me think. I just hope my other club that I support (Dortmund) don’t follow because then I’ll be done with football as a whole until this shit is sorted. Money has ruined football as we know it

18
Salute27•

If Sky get the rights for the ‘Super League’ I would be interested in the stance of Neville, Keane and Co then. Would they stay on to analyse and commentate for crazy money or leave.

17
ShutTheFACup_•

I genuinely believe they’d still want it stopping. 100% under the impression you put 1 of the owners of the 12 clubs in front of Gary Neville he’d fight them

7

This brought me to tears

I mean I know he's right, and it's a serious issue, but I do love it when he gets angry and has that squeaky high-pitched voice.

10
Halvrort•

Said it before and I’ll say it again: my 27 year relationship with Liverpool Football Club is done if we go through with this. Fuck all the way off.

10
[deleted]•

100% same. I don't give a fuck about Liverpool vs juve or atletico in some meaningless 12 vs 9th place fixture in a league where no one can get relegated. Done wirh football of this nonsense happens

8
Halvrort•

Yeah it’s a ridiculus thought. The socialist values of LFC resonates with my view of life. I do not in any way, shape or form hate money, but I absolutely hate bottomless greed with my entire soul. Football for me will be the grassroot and playing with my mates.

5
gmiljevi•

Saddens me to say it, but if this letter of intent comes out and Liverpool is one the cosigners I will be boycotting my club.

I think relegation isn't the answer I think as they've shown they're only interested in making money hit them in their pockets fuck them. Us supporters have been here long before the owners and we'll be here long after as well. These are our clubs not theirs.

5
WH6TSINANAME•

BT finally got around to mentioning it.

Asked Brendan Rodgers and he passed on answering it.

3
malushanks95•

I don’t think any manager would comment on it as they would get into trouble with the higher ups. Even Ole refused to comment on it

7
WH6TSINANAME•

I had every expectation of Ole refusing, his club are part of it and he knows he's there by luck.

5
malushanks95•

I don’t think any of them are going to comment anything till they are told by the club to do so. Everyone will dodge the questions even the clubs which aren’t included

2
WH6TSINANAME•

Rio pretty much of same opinion as Neville when BT finally get around to talking about it.

3
WestSiding•

Wonder if Klopp was on board with this taking into account his close relationship with the board. I feel he knew about this all along.

2†
wassam1•

I don't think Klopp has much of a say in such an issue. He is an employee at the end of the day. It's like when you work for a company and the owners decide to sell. You pretty much can't do anything even if you're the CEO.

16
abstract_titanic•

I can see that being his stance ad the way he went about it. he had more than enough on his plate and is very pragmatic in general.

2
DCDa192•

Sir Alex Ferguson said he soesnt think United was involved because he, himself was not part of the decision process. I guess it's the same with the managers of the clubs that this specific process is done by the owners and them alone

2

This seems like what a 14year old with his moms credit card details would think is a brilliant idea.

This is those Pepsi adverts from the 90s come to fruition.

The whole thing gets me so heated. Outside of the obvious made points though, the fucking cheek of Stan Kroenke is disgusting. No investment in Arsenal in years, no CL in 5 years and he thinks Arsenal are deserving of sitting with the big boys. Fuck right off.

Absolutely no different to the Liverpool Banter Era trying to join.

The whole situation just makes me so angry. Fucking Oil Tycoons and American Bastardization of sport
