Why does rolling the batteries in my remote make them work again?

Well I never replace the batteries in my remote when it dies I just open the back and rub them so they roll back and forth in the socket for a few seconds and then the remote works again for a few days. I've done this with different remotes and different setups and they've all worked so can someone provide a scientific explanation?
