Sonic Generations, I like it!
I'm late to the game I realise at this point seeing as Sonic Generations came out at the start of the month now... however I really felt like I wanted to provoke some discussion about it and just express my love for the game.
I picked up Sonic Generations on my lovefilm rental list with a skeptical view of "following previous titles it can't be good!", but being a long running jaded fan of Sonic since my youth, believing the license could not do wrong for years. Swallowing title after title, I spent three months playing Sonic Heroes somehow! I thought to myself "What's the worst that can happen".
Oh my days. Sonic Generations is a beautiful game, this may be hyperbole but I have not found myself sat and actually enjoying a game as much as I did, a large section of the game was me sat in my living room, back lurched forward reveling in the nostalgia and beauty of the whole thing. My first thing to point out is this; the artwork in this game is actually gorgeous all things considered, the classic Sonic levels sometimes suffer an issue of the background being a bit too busy, distracting players from the foreground. Each level contains interesting scenery and the redesigns of each level were near perfection in my opinion except for a few near-misses (I'm looking at you Classic City Escape).
As for actual gameplay I guess I've got two bases to cover here, classic Sonic was a real treat to begin with but as we begin to progress towards the more modern levels I found that the designs became a bit too abstract from their original material and this made gameplay feel a little bit slower and some of the traps encountered in the classic level versions of the modern levels are a bit cheap.
Classic Sonic's physics are near perfect they remind me of the classic games, the sense of momentum from his movements such as rolling down a hill were brilliant. The pace of the earlier levels are far more suitable for the classic Sonic sections I found, since they were originally designed with this play style in mind.
Modern Sonic's levels were actually a surprising treat, I came in thinking it would suffer the same issues as previous Sonic games a bad camera, a focus on holding up rather than platforming but I found the game managed to perfectly create a sense of speed in the modern Sonic levels whilst slowing down from time to time to create some fun platforming sections of using stuff from previous Sonic games such as ring dash and wall jump to help keep the pace up.
There is a confession of mine however, I actually preferred the modern Sonic levels... even on the retro levels, a personal favourite of mine being the modern version of Chemical Plant Zone.
The score for the game was outstanding with some fantastic remixes of tunes (looking at the modernised versions of Green Hill Zone), I would happily pay for an OST disc of this game.
So yeah, I liked this game. That's all.
