Modified SS routine for spina bifida defect?
Hey r/fitness. I've been lurking around this subreddit for a while now in hopes of getting back to the gym soon. I had been going for about a year straight 3-4 times a week, but I was taught by my friends to do chest/triceps one day, back and bis another, shoulders one, and then legs if I had the time. After a year of this, I had gotten pretty tone (7% body fat), but I still kind of had moobs and didn't have the strength I wanted.
I looked into SuperStrength, but I was born with a spina bifida defect. Basically, I am missing the piece of the bone that juts outwards in one of the vertebrae of my lumbar spine. I threw my back out the first time when I was 14, and have been seeing a chiropractor ever since. He instructed me not to do things like dead lifts, squats, or military press that put too much strain on the lower back.
Could anyone help me with a modified routine that would circumvent my weaknesses? When I would do back and bi, I only did one exercise that focused on the lower back, and that was really just bending forward, sometimes with weights added. I would love a routine like StartingStrength where I could see some actual results.
Also, I saw some recommended books to read on nutrition in the FAQ. What's the best for a single male with little to no cooking skills and a restricted budget?
Thanks, guys. I really can't wait to get back to the gym.
