Has the term Roleplaying Game lost it's meaning?

I've discussed this with several friends but I'd like to know what you guys think. I've seen it become a trend naming something with a skill tree and level up system an RPG among video game developers, video game magazines and even gamers itself yet the game lacks elements of what I think roleplaying is. The ability to take on the role of the hero and make decisions that could possibly change the fate of the world you are in. I've been thinking that we should just go ahead and find a way to get the genre renamed to something completely different. What are your thoughts on this?
