What happened to the r/politics of old? It is actually useful now

For a long time, I didn't bother with r/politics. I am very interested in politics but the subreddit was just a circle jerk of republican trolls. Since OWS started there has been a dramatic change. Almost every link is something I, as a progressive, can upvote. I'm pleased of course, but I am not sure I understand how this happened.
