Is there a good place for a systems-oriented programmer to start in web development?

My programming experience is almost completely C/Java/various ASMs. I had to learn html/css in a day for a school project and, while painful, I was able to put out a marginally acceptable page. The project made me realize that I need to know more about web development if i ever am forced to do something like that again. The closest experience I've had to this is LaTex, is there any good place to start?
