Can anyone point me to readings on the social contract?

My gut and the way that I was raised tell me that I am all for the social contract, the (polite and slight) redistribution of wealth, socialism, taxation, and all that stuff. I wholeheartedly and passionately believe that we're all tied together in society and we should do all we can to help everyone get by. I'd love to see social democracy in my country (the US) a la norway, UK, etc.

My problem is, I'm not very articulate or very well read about it. Can anyone point me to resources that justify the social contract, redistribution of wealth, taxation, social insurance, etc?

My gut (again with the gut) rebels against libertarian and anarcho-capitalist ideas as a kind of social darwinism, but all I can come up with is my own voluntary personal preference as a justification. Which is fine, but doesn't make for good argument.
