Scapegoating

It seems a lot of people feel better about a loss if they can blame it on someone. That doesn't help you win. In fact, it's more likely to make you lose.

It doesn't really matter if it's that person's fault or not. Yelling at them will almost never increase your chances of winning the game.

Why does everyone care so much whose fault it is? A lost game is a lost game. "Quit feeding" or "This is your fault" does absolutely nothing to turn your loss into a win. "I told you so" is completely worthless and likely to lose you the game.

If you want to criticize make it constructive, helpful, specific, and nice. "Hey ashe, just try not joining the fight until after the shaco shows up." "Hey tank, make sure we're close enough to help before you initiate." "Hey ashe, make sure you're staying behind one of us this late in the game." "Hey guys, let's have singed lead the way."

Bonus points if you can say something BEFORE it happens.

It's important to not demoralize your teammates. Even the bad people want to win the game, and they want approval from their teammates. If you help them earn the carrot, they'll listen to you. If you try to use the stick, they'll give you a "Defeat" engraved stick right back.

Perhaps if we redditors can simply say "scapegoating" in chat when we see it happening, we can start a trend. You don't need to be confrontational or explain it or anything. When you see one teammate harassing another, simply say "scapegoating" and leave it at that. If it happens enough, the phenomenon will create discussion about that particular behavior outside of the game, help others to identify when they're doing it in the game, and may help to reduce the toxicity of the greater LoL community.

tl;dr When you see it happening in game, simply say "scapegoating" and drop it.
