Can insurance companies grandfather exclusionary riders in 2014 under the Affordable Care Act?
I had a back injury recently, which after seeing the bills motivated me to purchase insurance, despite my financial situation. I knew that I would be excluded for this as a pre-existing condition, but it was more for peace of mind in case something else like this comes up. I was accepted, with an exclusionary rider of anything to do with my spine or related ligaments/muscles.
According to this "Starting in 2014, no exclusionary riders will be permitted in any health insurance." Does that mean that my current rider will be eliminated, or would I have to reapply for another policy in order to get that to go away since it's already part of my contract? I'm just not sure whether this applies to new policies, or existing ones as well. My insurance provider wasn't able to answer this.
I know it's a complex question, and if I had the money for a lawyer I'd surely be asking them, but unfortunately all of my cash flow has been funneled into my health expenses. If anyone knows, it would be appreciated. Thanks reddit.
