How to break into a league?

After a few years away from bowling, I'd like to get back in via a recreational league - but I don't know any other bowlers. I'm in a new city and the houses I was familiar with have been torn down. SOB

Is there a trick to becoming a sub or member of a team if you're starting from scratch at a new house? I'd like to work up to getting to know people - but have not had the ability to go throw at a dedicated time every week & make friends.
