If a business owner catches a customer shoplifting, but the customer bought something earlier with his credit card, can the business owner legally add a charge to the credit card to pay for the stolen item?
I know I can't/shouldn't get legal advice on this forum. I'm just wondering if this is a reasonable/normal/legal thing to do. I know none of you are my lawyer, are giving me legal advice, etc.
Basically a guy I know runs a bar that sells cigars too. A customer came in with his buddies, bought some cigars and drinks, and left. But then the guy noticed a $60 torch lighter went missing, and when he checked the security cameras he saw the customer stuff the lighter in his shoe.
Now he wants to add $60 to the customer's original credit card purchase to make up for the stolen merchandise.
What do you think?
