My character needs a gun...

I have a character that needs a small gun. However, I'm not that versed in weapons, and have no idea what would suit her best. She is a DoD contractor going into a potentially dangerous situation, and she needs to carry a gun for her safety. And to possibly defend herself. Is this a good place to ask this question, or would an xpost to /r/guns be a better idea?
