What songs should an amateur guitar player know?

Hey Reddit, I was hanging out the other day with a group of friends with my guitar whilst building an airplane for our senior design project. As we all took turns playing music and singing as we waited for some epoxy to finish curing an interesting situation occurred. Everyone else that was playing guitar was playing songs that everyone had at least once heard before whereas all the songs I played were unknown to the rest of the group. So I've been wondering how to balance my own personal choice in learning the songs that appeal to me versus the songs that appeal everyone else... And so I've come to ask not only for your perspective on that balance, but also for songs that I should learn so more people can enjoy when I play!

TLDR: What songs should I know so everyone enjoys when I play guitar?
