Why do the Leafs play the Canucks?

Hi guys, I'm new to hockey so I apologize in advance if my question is stupid. I thought teams from the Eastern conference play each other only and same applies to Western conference, until they go to playoffs. But since on Dec 17th Leafs play Canucks I guess that's not the case. So how does this work?
