If I were to read the work of any poet (or poets) from any period in history, whom should I read and why?

I'm doing a transcription project to improve my penmanship and familiarity with poetry! I'd prefer to organize the poems I transcribe by author, but have very little experience with poetry and am unsure where to start.

So far, I've transcribed poems by Hafiz (10th Century Suffi Mystic) and Wallace Stevens. What other works and poets should I investigate?
