Tried installing Windows 7 on an empty harddrive, complete and utter chaos ensued. Is what I want to do even possible?

HUGE shoutouts to Drehmini & Xivspew

I bought a computer a few years back that had Vista on it, I bought an upgrade version of Windows 7 to install over Vista. Another year later I was able to build my own pc. I used the hdd from my old pc in the new rig, and W7 worked without fail, despite what I've heard about having to call support and telling them you changed mobos.

What I'm trying to do now however, is install Windows 7 on the new, bigger harddrive (1tb vs 500gb). I tried installing it as a fresh install with the W7 discs I bought and it installed fine, until I tried using my product key, which didn't work because I didn't upgrade from another Win OS. I called tech support, they wanted me to purchase recovery discs for Vista because I still have my Vista OEM key. But I don't want to spend $20 on something I'll use for literally 10 minutes.

Is there a way to do this?

tl;dr Trying to install W7 Upgrade on a new harddrive without installing Vista on it. Old harddrive has a working copy of the W7 Upgrade.

I'm also trying to stay away from piracy/torrenting, no matter how much I fucking hate Microshit right now, I can't succumb to stealing.
