Need the confidence to end it
I’m currently a freshman in college, thinking about ending my first serious relationship, currently just short of its seventh month. The girl is a senior in high school, and might attend the school that I’m at next year, though she is by no means a shoo-in. I’ve had mixed feelings about the relationship for a bit, and while there’s no particular issue or problem, continuing dating isn’t a particularly attractive option either. I don’t really enjoy spending most of every day texting, and it seems as though nothing of meaning is ever actually said in our conversations (lots of “you’re the best!” etc., while I’d really like something more stimulating). I would generally prefer to break up in person, but I won’t see her again until a few days after Christmas, and really don’t want to wait until significant expenditures have been made by both parties to end it. I feel as though I’m missing out on an important part of college (by having guarded-at-best interactions with females here), and the relative likelihood of this relationship not ending in marriage means that my time would be better spent continuing to learn the nuances of interaction with the opposite sex.
My concerns are twofold: first, the girl is much more attached to the relationship than I, as far as I can tell. I really don’t want to greatly upset her. Secondly, I’m afraid that I’ll end up regretting breaking up, whether for lack of success in dating afterwards or realization that even a relationship that isn’t thrilling is preferable for the companionship that it offers.
Even in typing this, r/R_A, I’m becoming a little more sure that breaking up would be the right thing to do, but I’m still worried, simply fearing the unknown.
