How video games made me question reality.

Now look, I consider myself a philosophical person. I have random moments where a deep thought will pop into my head, and I'll just sit there and try to work it out. I wasn't always like this, though. There was one factor in particular that set me down this path more than anything else:

Call of Duty.

I know, I know, that sounds ridiculous. But hear me out.

It seems like yesterday that the first Modern Warfare hit the stands. Everyone was going crazy over that game. I didn't buy it...but my friends did. I would go over to my friends' houses and play MW with them constantly. We'd try out all these glitches and tricks to try to get any advantage we could get. One glitch in particular screwed with my head so much that I was never the same. It was a glitch where if you positioned yourself just right you could "fall" right off the map. My friend was a master at it, and showed me how. He positioned me just right, nudged me off a ledge, and I fell off the map.

As my character fell, the world above me rapidly decreased in size. Surrounding it was an immense void that seemed to swallow up the reality I had taken for granted. And I just kept falling. My friend and I decided to test the limit of this glitch, so we left the game and let my character fall for a half hour. When we came back, the map was a distant speck, a lone star in a vast night sky that only grew.

My mind was blown. Here was an artificial reality, a simple human construct, with a space far greater than I would ever had assumed had I stayed on the limited map area. It just made me wonder how infinitely huge our universe must be, compared to the insignificant, laughably small Earth map.

After another 15 minutes my friend and I got bored with the experiment and started a new game. But my mind had been set on a philosophical course that I have stayed on to this day.

TL/DR: I discovered infinity inside the first Modern Warfare. It screwed with my head.
