A video game addiction could be tearing apart my marriage.

Just for a bit of backstory... my husband and I are both avid gamers and nerds. I love Minecraft, Batman Arkham City, Skyrim, Borderlands and Rock Band 3 (among others). He loves to play those games as well and we usually play them together, but particularly he plays League of Legends. For the 7 years I've known him we've been very passionate about gaming but I never felt it was at the point where we were addicted (we could go for many days without playing and there wouldn't be a problem, etc).

But for the past 6 months, I feel his obsession with League of Legends has grown to unhealthy levels. He talks about the game all the time, he plays every waking moment he's not at work, etc. Today when I came home from work I found my husband had not only not showered or even taken the dog outside, but neglected helping with any of the chores I had asked him to do (putting away clothes or dishes - in fact, he just left a mess from where he made himself lunch). I'm all about relaxing on your day off - hell, on my day off I spent the whole day playing Skyrim - but I think if my husband asked me to help him with something or do a quick chore, I would do it and then play. That's just what marriage is, a give and take. Is this such a difficult concept?

This sort of behavior happens almost every day I work and he doesn't (just so you don't think I'm making a big deal about this one incident). And on the days he works late and comes home long after I've gone to sleep, he still stays up to play until 4 or 5 AM (meaning I never fall asleep next to my husband and in fact will wake up sometimes at 2 or 3 AM with an empty space next to me and get confused). Even if we go out to dinner or I make dinner for him at home, he will sit at the computer and either play or read the LoL forums, or browse them on his phone. We're not even safe away from the house! I can't remember the last time we had any real dinner conversation. I hope to god they never make a LoL mobile version, because I'll never get to talk to him again!

This game seems to have punished me - I have to do the chores he ends up not doing, and even if I leave them undone for long enough and see if he notices, he won't really care and just wait for me to do them (I don't think it's quite as malicious as I'm making it sound, it's just more like the game makes him a zombie and he entirely loses track of time and doesn't do what I ask). Before he discovered LoL he never had this problem, so it's definitely not a case of utter laziness or inability to do what I ask him. Outside of LoL he's a genuinely nice guy and wouldn't ever want to hurt me.

I'm so sick and tired of it. The way our schedules fall we only really have 1 full day off together, and he does spend that day with me, but the other 6 days of the week I would venture a guess that he plays League of Legends for 12 hours a day at least (that's on top of his full time job). Meanwhile, when I come home from work I am doing chores or the things that need to be done - not enjoying playing games or spending time with him. Being an adult isn't always fun, and it seems to me like he is content letting me take care of it while he gets to have fun.

I'll always be a gamer and a child at heart, but sometimes you just need to grow up. My husband is a man-child and I need to make it stop. GROW UP!

But how do I put my foot down without treating him like a child? He knows I hate how much he plays the game. But he is stubborn and also thinks that I should lighten up and would probably react negatively even to the most level-headed confrontation (even if I lost my shit one day and just yelled at him, I don't think even that would get him to stop... the threat of divorce may be the only thing to wake him up, but I don't think I'm at that point yet, and I definitely don't want to throw that around lightly). I don't want to put myself in a motherly role and try to tell him what to do, but I'm afraid if left unchecked this sort of behavior could ruin my marriage in a few years.

Does he seem addicted to you? Am I overreacting? Do you think it is just a phase? Ugh. I've considered somehow disabling the game on his computer, but I think the repercussions of that wouldn't be worth it.
