A mind boggling problem with a jailbroken 4G

I'm hoping somebody here can help out, or at least point me in the right direction, because I'm totally lost. I'm trying to add new music to my iPhone, and I'm having a bit of a problem when I go to sync. I'm not updating any software, just syncing music and apps. When I connect the USB, iTunes informs me that I've got about 3.2 GB of space free on my phone, like so:

Problem is, once I start to sync the phone, I'm alerted to the fact that I'm totally out of space, and have in fact exceeded the storage space.

Here's the issue - in total, I'm adding about 50 songs from my library, and putting 1 app back on my phone (AutoTrader). In doing so, the amount of space that apps consume jumps from 1.71 GB to 4.2 GB. I am relatively certain that the AutoTrader app doesn't consume 2.5 GB of space.

Has anybody encountered this? Any suggestions that don't involve restoring the phone and re-jailbreaking?
