Special Named Fox [Possible Spoiler..?]

Has anyone else come across the named fox Pumpkin?

I was doing a portion of Arniel's Endeavor and was sent to Southfringe Sanctum to retrieve a staff. In there, I also came across this little guy locked in a cage. I freed him, and he didn't seem aggressive towards me. However, that didn't stop my stupid follower from bashing his head in. Loot was just a fox pelt, but I'm curious if anyone else has come across him, and if he serves any other purpose?
