Ok so I got high, and now I have another question!

Honesty, how does programming work? I understand you type a scrip in a certain language into the computer and it understands it BUT here in lies the Rub...how does the computer know to the text "multiply" means to multiply and not divide or subtract or do something else. how does it know the letters they we ask are what they are? Basically how did we program the first computer? How did it work?
