Power-steering noise with my BWM 318I - 1995, please help

Hello All:

I have the above referenced car (105k miles). For about a week and a half, the car has been making a whining noise as I turn. You can feel the stiffness a bit in the turn of the wheel.

I'm lazy, so it took me several days to actually check the dipstick. When I went to find the dipstick, I found it wasn't there (internet confirmed): http://malaysia.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071129133750AAqa6GM

What can I do short of going to a mechanic? Should I get the fluid changed out? Is it ok to drive?
