Question about Total Internal Reflection

I get how total internal reflection works... it makes perfect sense with Snell's law. My question is - what happens if you have some light traveling through some glass or a fiber, and the glass has a tiny crack in it. Does the light still totally-internal-reflect? Or does there have to be a tiny space between the two pieces of the cracked glass in order for that to happen?
