Does time dilation have a cause, or is an inherent property of the universe?
Whenever I hear time dilation pop up in discussions about black holes or near-light speed travel, I always wonder "why?". More specifically, why does time do what it does in those situations?
I'm used to cause-effect situations, so my brain is not happy when something "just is that way"...
