At the heart of what makes atheism great...
My whole family are Christians. I've had a hard time being an atheist while keeping them in my life for some time now, but I decided, today, that it is the appropriate time to divulge that I do not believe in any god, and I did it with a wall-of-text Facebook status. It's like this:
At the heart of what makes atheism great is that among all the systems of belief, it is the only one that assigns no extrinsic value to the doing of good - charity, love, friendship, kindness - and its demographic, therefore, does good not for the acquisition of the fruits of some divine promise which gives it worth, but for the sake of doing good in itself because good is worth. Officially announcing my atheism to the world: I am a better person without god.
Allow me to tackle one possible issue you may have with this during the last few moments I have your attention: that I grouped atheism as a belief system. Atheism is a belief system with no components. It is a null-value, so to speak. It is a belief system that has no beliefs. It is not a religion, because there is no faith involved, but it is a belief system.
Thank you, and wish me good luck in dealing with my family's objections.
