Goodness and Heroism

When someone is good, just for the sake of being good, because it is the moralistic or right thing to do (same thing with unselfish heroism), why does this exist? Why are we wired to evolve using natural selection when our evolution does not appear to have an effect outside the immediate planet that we occupy?
