Cultural compromise in a relationship or is he gun shy?
I'd like to get some perspective on this one...
My SO and I are in a happy, stable, committed relationship. As a couple from two different countries, we're used to navigating cultural differences and making compromises. He's from France and I'm from west Texas. This one is eating me, though. We're in agreement that this relationship is "it", but have different agendas for things. I'd like to get married in two or three years, but he sees that as something for much further down the line. Think, seven to ten years. If at all. Even engagement of that period would be more acceptable to me, but it's not on the table. We'll be living together, sharing finances, perhaps considering starting a family in that time.
I understand where he's coming from: most people where he's from get married closer to and well into their thirties. His parents had a nasty divorce and are constantly warning him to never get married. I don't doubt his level of commitment: the man has made many compromises in his life so that we could spend the first few years in the United States It's not a dealbreaker: I'm not happy about it at all, but will accept it as something he wont compromise on in the relationship.
...But I can't help but feel a little concerned about this. It makes me very uncomfortable and a little insecure in a relationship I'm otherwise confident in. Women of Reddit, could you give me some feedback? Have any of you been a similar situation or dated/been married to someone of a different culture?
EDIT: I'd be really interested in hearing from someone in a long lasting relationship that chose not to get married.
