How to paint a cutie mark in a bowl that has a pole in the middle?

In ceramics class I'm working on a bowl with a stick in the dead center. It'll serve to cook crust-less apple pie for me, its quite delicious! I decided to glaze (paint) the bowl orange and put Applejack's cutie mark in the bowl itself. How can I get the cutie mark near perfect?

I was thinking about using a stencil ledgendoflazer posted, but I'm not too sure how to use this in a bowl thats not all that big. it'd seem to me like putting the stencil in place would be awkward. The bowl isn't tiny, but its not big either. Just big enough to contain a smushed and rather large apple. Sadly, I cannot find an image of what these bowls usually look like. ._.
