I fucking hate people.
In speech, we don't usually do anything much that is productive but today was a little bit different. We had a little mock-debate where there were some set topics you could choose to debate about. We were given a day or two to prepare or speeches. The lot of us chose the topic dealing with the death penalty. We were allowed to pair up into groups and discuss and research the given topics. One group was totally for the death penalty with 3 people. (Let's call this group penis) The other group was against the death penalty with 1 person because his partners were sick(Let's call his group coolbeans).
It was pretty unfair, 3 vs 1.. but coolbeans soldiered on. Coolbeans brought statistics and facts about the death penalty while the other group, out of nowhere only brought a bible. Yeah, a fucking bible. That made me rage so hard. They quoted a verse out of Genesis saying "man shall not kill or will be killed" those are the exact words they said, but I can't seem to find those words. A bible isn't a credible source to bring into a debate is it? As Coolbeans was about to retort, a member from the Penis group kept on interrupting him saying "Nuh uh, you can't say anything about that. Nope nu-uh!!!!" Her tactics were childish and biased. Coolbeans is known for having outlandish thoughts and is very annoying throughout class, but today he surprised me. He remained calm, didn't yell like a certain member in Penis and had clear well thought out points. After the debate was over, I gave the Penis group my two cents. I said and I quote
"You decided to bring religion into this matter and even brought the bible into this. Your views are biased and clearly didn't let your opponent finish. If you say God is such a benign being telling us that a life should be sought out to be killed for revenge, then would such a God let them be killed in the first place? You're saying 'what if'; your views are biased, do not bring religion into the matter if you don't have facts to back it up. Our founding fathers found this country based on the Constitution and Pursuit of Happiness, you have the right to live, these are your unalienable rights. Why would you want to take a life? On another hand, because you've brought up hypothetical questions, I have one for you. "WHAT IF your sister killed someone, would you want her to be put to death?" (I chose her sister because I'd knew it would strike a nerve) but being the stubborn person she is, she was like "yeah, I want her to be killed, it'd be fair." But today made me rage so hard. klolthxforlistening.
