Have you ever stood up for someone being bullied/messed with when it seemed to really matter?

I was waiting at the bus stop today and saw this young kid, probably last year of middle school or first year of high school get bullied by a couple of kids who were older high school kids. I'm a junior in college so I look and feel older and I should have fucking said something, but for some reason I just couldn't bring myself to. They never put their hands on him but I've been feeling like a cowardly piece of shit all afternoon. Any stories where you didn't do what I did?
