Will recreating extinct animals with their DNA ever be possible?

Of course, asking if something will "ever be possible" isn't a very good question, because it's impossible to predict what we'll have in more than a hundred years (fifty years, really).

I'm just wondering if we're anywhere near this technology at all, or if it's even scientifically possible.
