I don't want Skyrim. What should I do?
Believe it or not, this is a real question.
As you all know, the internet is collectively in tears about how great this game is. So, while we were both screwing around online a week or so after it came out, I turned to my wife and said, "Please don't get me Skyrim." She asked why, and I said "You remember what happened when I got into Oblivion. I wasted a ton of time and you got resentful that I was spending all day playing a video game. Plus, I'm looking for a job and getting ready to transfer to a four year university; I really don't need to get immersed in this huge, awesome game." I was joking around, of course, but I meant it.
So yesterday, I sat down at the computer, and she had her Amazon account page open, and there's Skyrim, on its way here for Winter Gift Holiday^tm. She clearly heard me express my enthusiasm for how awesome Skyrim is going to be, but didn't hear me say that this is precisely the reason I don't want it. Other reasons I don't want it:
- It's too expensive. Remember the part about how I'm looking for a job?
- It's the PS3 version. No mods, long load times, etc.
So my question is, what do I do? Do I tell her I saw it, ruin the surprise, but return/cancel it asap? Do I wait until I get it, feign surprise but then explain that I don't really want it? I really don't want to take it and then try to walk the line between playing it just enough to satisfy her that I like the gift, but not enough that it's problematic. It will be problematic. It's a glorious, epic, fully realized fantasy world.
First world problems, I know, but how do I handle this situation??
