Tried to compliment mk6 GLI at gas station

I pulled up to my local gas station and saw a mk6 GLI parked at the shop so I parked next to it. I went into the store and came out around the same time the owner of the car did. Looked like he had lowering springs and some Audi alloys and I thought it looked nice, so I shot him a compliment on the car and he thought I was making fun of him for some reason. I drive a mk7 GLI, and I guess he thought I was making a joke out of him driving an older model :(
