More Colgate story-time
Colgate focused her attention away from Wickson and watched as the train station appeared from around the bend. It was much smaller than the one they left from; there were hardly any ponies waiting on the platform. She guessed only a few were actually passengers or family members, the rest seemed to be either couriers or workers. A loud, deafening screech was made when the train braked and Colgate lurched forward a bit as it suddenly slowed. She let out an audible sigh as she got up to collect her luggage from the rack above her seat. Normally a servant would be carrying her bags but the days of being waited on were no more. Not used to such tasks, she grabbed the largest bag by the handle with her mouth and yanked in down but the weight was a bit much for her and as the train halted abruptly it dropped straight down on her hoof. She cursed loudly.
“I suppose now that we live in rural Equestria we should start speaking like it.” Wickson remarked with a hint of sarcasm. “I just hope you don’t make a habit of it.” Colgate blushed with embarrassment as she picked up the bag from the floor. She was only allowed to bring one bag with her on the train, the rest of her belongings were being sent over via several wagons as arranged by her parents.
Back in the city, Colgate was regarded as a bit of an odd pony. Her wealthy upbringing assured that she could live on her family’s fortune with comfort, yet she refused to be a useless leach on society. She became interested in dentistry the day her first filly tooth fell out and began performing imaginary exams on all of her dolls. When she was seven she tried to give her younger brother a root canal but ended up splitting open his gums, putting him in the emergency ward overnight. The setbacks didn’t stop Colgate and when she finally earned her degree she set up an office in the middle of the candy district causing much ado with the local media. She didn’t have much business at first but since the entire building was owned by her family she could focus all of her time on her practice without having to worry about paying the bills.
During a rather slow day, Wickson stumbled in abstrusely through the front door of the office. He was covering his mouth with his hoof yet there were streams of blood escaping.
“My goodness, what happened?” Colgate asked as she rushed over to help the bleeding pony. Wickson tried to speak but his mouth was too damaged and he could only mutter unintelligible mumbles tinged with pain. Tears were falling down his face which was twisted in agony.
“Don’t panic, lets go into the back and I’ll take a look at you.” Colgate said with a calm, collected voice as she led the bleeding pony to the examining room.
“Colgate!” Wickson yelled from outside their cabin. “Are you going to get off the train some time today or what?” Colgate was once again snapped back into reality by his intrusive yammering. She was mildly irked by this but her reminiscent memories clouded her anger. As they were walking down the train car aisles Colgate wondered if he shared the same fond memories of that day.
“Wickson, do you remember when we first met?” She asked cheerfully.
“You mean when that drunken ruffian kicked me square in the jaw unawares? I’d rather forget that whole day, thank you very much.” And with that he quickly exited the train.
