Problems with AUCTeX and preview

I have recently started using AUCTeX to edit latex documents again. Last time I used it (about in May), everything was working perfectly. Since then, I haven't made any conscious changes to my emacs system, but I have probably updated a number of packages on my computer automatically. Long story short, something broke somewhere. Hunting around on the web, it appears that the problem is an update in ghostscript, and I found this patch to fix the problem. After applying the patch and installing the byte-compiled files, preview is working again; more or less. That is, the latex images are being compiled and inserted in the right place in my documents, but they all take up an entire screen, most of it whitespace.

Has anyone experienced any similar problems, or know where I should start hunting for a solution?
