Dr. Who gifts please explain?

What's with all the Dr. Who stuff...are there really that many people into Dr. Who cus it seems like every day theres 3 more screwdrivers or tardis USB hubs or whatever. Is Dr. Who really that popular? I've watched a few episodes (maybe even all of season 1) but I still don't get the fanaticism.
