A Sad Day

Today, as I was heading out of Whiterun back towards my College in Winterhold I wandered through a giant camp, out of curiosity. I had appreciated the giants and their flock from afar all this time, but never before had I approached them. My curiosity cost me dearly. As I reached out to touch the gentle mammoth on it's trunk, it reared up and attacked. Being a battle minded mage I retreated some distance and began to dispatch these beasts.

It was a hard battle to be sure, and my follower, a fellow student from the College, and the only other Dark Elf, was rightly terrified. We retreated again some distance, only to find a magical anomaly that had been created in the Aftershock of the Eye of Magus incident. Beset on all side we had no choice but to fight.

The battle heated up even further, and, low on magicka, Brelyna rushed forward to attack the nearest Mammoth head on. Caught in my fireball, she promptly died. Aghast at my actions, I was breifly overcome with grief, and nearly killed. Then rage took over, and I emerged victorious, if one can call it that, in the field. Surrounded by corpses of gentle beasts, and staring at my friends body, I wept before I began my duty.

I carried my dear friend from White Run to Winterhold, dressed her in the finest clothing I could purchase, and laid her to rest in front of the hall of elements. I laid a staff near her, and a mammoth tusk to remind me of the event that led to her death. It wasn't a quest, there was no reward, but I was more compelled to do this than I had ever been to clear bandits out of caverns, or retrieve trinkets for my fellow scholars.
