I'm gay, and I want gay people to be able to get married, but...

My personal reason for supporting same-sex marriage is that I think the relationship between lovers of the same sex is close enough to the relationship between traditional husbands and wives that it deserves the same dignity, recognition, and social status. It bothers me that if I'm intellectually honest, I have to admit that this is an arguable point, since society might decide to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

And I can't defend the "rights" or "equality" argument, either. Watch that Bachmann video again. Bachmann, I believe, actually presents a logically consistent position, paraphrased:

Individuals have equal rights. In particular, every individual has the right to marry another person of the opposite sex. The right to marry another person of the same sex is not a federally guaranteed right.

Now where is the flaw in that?

The response that

Gay couples should have the same rights as straight couples, including the right to marriage.

seems a little off: civil rights are given to individual people, not corporations of thousands of people, ten-person assemblies, or two-person assemblies.

Help, anyone?
