Teenage Writer. Thinking about Quitting. Nobody Reads Them.
Edit: Just made a blog. Ahmadsstories.wordpress.com
Hey everyone, this is my first post on Reddit. I read a few posts here and there and found this website really interesting and often beneficial. I just turned 15 about two weeks ago, and I've been writing for about 3 years. I write short mystery stories, often I try to stray away from the cliche storylines. I don't read at all, mainly because I have a short attention span, and my writing was actually inspired by my hatred for reading. My teacher, who is actually a really smart teacher. I know a lot of people say that, but she has a Ph.D in Literature, and has gone around the world meeting famous people, just to experience life in general. This gives her an experience, and an opinion worth valuing. She tells me I'm her best student at writing, and she doesn't understand how I could have such a 'talent'. I love writing, and it's my way to escape from any stress I get from school. I'm a Junior, and I just turned 15, yes I skipped a grade, and yes I started school early, so now I'm feeling the burden of schoolwork. Writing is my way to get things off my chest. The mystery stories are secretly based off of my own life, though nobody can really see it, unless they're my best friend, MAYBE. It's a very 'in between the line' relation. So after writing numerous stories, (my longest one is 26 pages, at 12 font.) Most of my stories take me about 3-5 months to write, and sometimes I feel proud. Here's the problem: Nobody reads them. I have about six readers, and even they aren't too psyched to always read my stories. I feel like quitting, because I put so much effort into making it non-cliche, very unpredictable, I spend hours a day trying to make the character development important in the story, and to make a very interesting storyline relate to my readers. Everyone tells me "Don't write for others, write for yourself." And this is my response:
Writing takes creativity, creativity takes effort, effort comes from motivation, motivation comes from my readers. I have no readers, which is no motivation, no effort, no creativity, and finally, no writing? Everyone tells me to try to publish them, but I know it's not that simple. A friend recommended this site, so here I am. I'd like to hear your guys' thoughts on this, and if you were actually interested in reading some, I could e-mail you them. Most of them are about 10-20 pages max, and I try my best to make the beginning very clinching, to make the person want to read it. I know how it is, because I hate reading, which is why I love writing. I love knowing I could do it the way I want to. Just wanted to give some sort of effort before I decided to quit in May, which is the release date of my final story. But if I could gather some readers who actually think my writing is good, I'd be really grateful.
Thank you for taking time to read this, it really could change me.
