Started playing Chrono Trigger for the first time, what makes it so great?

I recently bought Chrono Trigger for the DS because I've always heard how it's one the best rpgs. I loved Chrono Cross and people always say that Chrono Trigger was even better so I expected to be amazed.

I'm in the "New King" chapter and just got off the Blackbird and it just hasn't hooked me yet. Does it get better? Is there something I'm missing?

Was it just amazing for it's time? Or is that playing Chrono Cross first ruined the novelty that Chrono Trigger would've had kinda like how playing Twilight Princess first might make one not appreciate OoT as much?
