Upset, Not Thinking Clearly, Help me!
OK Reddit, so I have been working at my current position for a couple of years. I work for an independent optometrist as a certified optician in a small practice. I received my certification under the tutelage of the this optometrist. I have no qualms with this man, other than he's quite a bit of a pushover. Up until today I had no problems with my GM either. (more on that later)
However, I have had some scraps with a couple of my co-workers regarding my personal life. I went through a divorce my first year working there, partied quite a bit during that time (but still worked my ass off and got that certification), and we have religion differences. However, being the professional I am, I worked it through with them and everything was going well. I mean, I would bring some periodic rants and raves home about my work place's ethics and ideals to tell my boyfriend in confidence, but I never voiced my opinion at work, thinking I wouldn't stoop to the finger pointing level of most of my co-workers.
But one co-worker, the receptionist, and I could never get on the same level. She's been working there for five years, and has the doctor and GM wrapped around her little finger. Because our Asst. Manager is a complete deadbeat, the receptionist feels it's necessary for her personally to take that role upon herself and crack the whip. Keep in mind that all this woman does is answer phones and double check insurance eligibility. She is not a busy woman. She takes an hour typing up a sign that will let everyone know that we're closed for the holidays. She let me know a while back she does this on purpose to make it look like she's really busy, and so she's not presented another project. When she's doing this "project", for example, she will keep a keen eye out for any opticians that aren't working. If I'm chatting with another co-worker and the phone rings and I don't jump to it immediately, she will immediately go tell the doctor and GM complaining of how "swamped" she was and how I am so lazy. However, if you asked her to do my job at the pace I do with the accuracy that I do, she would lose it on her first patient. Most of the time, myself and the other opticians also will find ourselves doing her job too.....(RAWR!!! huff huff- ending rant on that)
Fast forward to yesterday, I informed my boyfriend that I needed to give $10 to this receptionist for her to buy the doctor his annual "from the company" Xmas present. No big deal right? Well I just happened to slip in there that the receptionist made a comment saying, "Everybody better freaking give me this ten dollars soon, or else they will personally have to deal with me. I will take their check book by force if I have to and make them sign me over ten damn dollars."
Quick Side Note: My boyfriend has severe PTSD, to the point of him not leaving his house sometimes, and often times with a fuse as short as Lincoln's profile on the penny. So....
My boyfriend explodes. It's the last straw for him. He flies off the handle, goes into my work (on my day off so I'm sitting helplessly at home) demands to speak to the manager (unfortunately it was the deadbeat asst. manager on shift yesterday). She calms him down, sets him up for an appointment today to see the doctor and the GM, and sends him on his way. Nice lady, just the epitome of lazy. For the record, I begged my bf not to go. Profusely. I admit he was completely in the wrong to step into my work related problems, and everyone is going to think that I'm a flipping middle schooler that sends her boyfriend to fight for her. Which is not the case. I'm just NOT a fighter, at all. I avoid conflict like the plague.
Now today (I'm sorry for the length, I'm getting to the good stuff now), my boyfriend speaks with my GM (again I have asked him not to do so, I'll just deal with it). He explains all of my concerns that I have been having over the past couple of years, and how I don't appreciate being treated the way I am. This is the part that completely pisses me off: MY GM TOLD MY BOYFRIEND THAT I AM A FUCKING LIAR (according to bf these are his exact words) AND THAT I AM COMPLETELY LAZY AND HE'S HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH ME. (news to me, I've gotten two performance based raises since I've been there.) He also that said that with each raise I gloated to everyone in the office about how much I make. Which btw, is a complete lie. The only reason anyone knew about the raise is because a friend of mine who used to work there asked me if I got my raise after I got my certification. I told her I had and THAT WAS IT! (Badass me, lemme tell ya). Anyway, my GM went on and on with more lies to my bf about how I take 4-5 cigarette breaks a day (I don't smoke), and how I don't make an effort to be friendly with my associates. (Several of my co-workers are "outside-of-work" friends)
OK, so I've told my story. My GM told my boyfriend that he still wants to keep me on staff because I'm good at my job and am a valuable member of the team o.O. But I'm really, really, REALLY thinking about telling this guy to go fuck himself when I go into work tomorrow. I know that's going to burn a big bridge (the doctor I work for is extremely connected locally), but I also know that I don't want to be an optician forever. Do I take this as an opportunity to progress and leave the industry for good, go to school for what I want and hope that future opportunity knocks? Or do I tough it out for the socially acceptable two weeks and try to find another position locally in the field (thinking economy-wise now). Or do I just go in with my head high tomorrow and say "Yeah, that's right! Come at me bro!" and go about my work as usual until they inevitably fire me for something mundane?
I'm much less irate now, thanks for listening. Could definitely still use some insight.
TL;DR: Dickhead boss, stay or leave job?
