my mom doesn't like my boyfriend
My boyfriend and I are both 21 and both in college. We've been friends since we were 11 years old and we've been dating for 4+ years. Since we've started college we've been doing long distance since he goes to school about 4 hours away from me.
When we first started college we tried breaking up so that we could date other people. Both of us found that we didn't like this arrangement. I went on a few dates but in the end I couldn't imagine life without my best friend.
Things have been going really well for us despite the long distance. We talk everyday and Skype often. I visit him once or twice a semester since he doesn't currently have a car. He is my best friend in the world and we've discussed getting married in the future. We both agree that we don't want to get married until we both have steady jobs and are much older. We also want to live together for a year or two before we get married. He plans on moving to the city where I am currently going to school once he finishes his degree.
I feel as though we have a pretty solid and reasonable plan. I love him with all my heart, and as I've said, he's my best friend in the world. The only problem is, my mom came out recently and told me that she doesn't think I should date him any more and that I need to go out with other people. She says that she doesn't think our relationship can work in the future because of "cultural differences." He is Mexican and I'm white. His parents speak spanish are of a lower economic status than my family. She told me that she doesn't think he'll be able to provide the kind of lifestyle that I'll want. In other words, she thinks that he will be poor and that I will never be happy with having less money than my parents do.
I love his family and have pretty much already been accepted as a member of the family. I'm always invited for holidays and I get along with all of them extremely well. I'm even studying Spanish so that I can better communicate with his parents. Meanwhile, I can't even invite my boyfriend over for dinner at my house, let alone holidays.
This is very difficult for my boyfriend who I have confided everything in. I've decided against taking my mother's advice to break up with him. However, she told me that if I didn't take her advice she would never support our relationship. Its a terrible position to be in and I dread spending the winter holiday in my hometown (where both my mom and BF will be.)
What should I do Reddit? Should I tell my mom that I won't be taking her advice? If I do this she is likely to become pretty angry. Should I just ignore it and see if she gets over it? Do you think that I am making a terrible life decision as she does? This whole situation has put a lot of strain on my already-strained relationship with my mom. The only thing I'm sure of is that I want to keep my boyfriend in my life.
TL;DR my mom doesn't like my boyfriend of 4+ years and its putting a strain on my relationship with her and I know its very difficult for my BF
