I'm new to EvE. Can i get some tips from you experienced players?

I'll start by saying that I vowed to never ever play an MMO ever again. EVE changed my outlook on MMO gaming. I was introduced to EVE last week (and was delighted to stumble on an expansion this week that made the game so much nicer to look at). My friend, who has a degree in finances with the goal of being in hedge funds, showed me the game and it's unlimited possibilities. He told me awesome stories of untamed, calculated trolling with little to no consequences, and possibility of battles with hundreds of ships. I was amazed, and just had to play. I've jumped in head first, and I have to say, my first experiences have been awesome. As of right now, I'm working on a pvp character with lvl 3-4 in most of the target skills. ive researched the ship build that I think I would want for my playstyle, and have read up on a little bit of battle theor type stuff..... That being said, I was hoping for some advice from seasoned players and salty sailors who know this game inside and out. what should I be doing at this point in the game to make some serious ISK? how can I get out of questing and start playing with people without getting my ass handed to me in low-sec?

any pointers would be awesome. Thanks vets!
